Claims Welsh sleep disorder sufferers are neglected

16/04/2010

Too many people in Wales are not getting the right treatment and diagnosis for sleep disorders, the British Lung Foundation has said.

The charity appealed to the Welsh NHS two think more carefully about sleep-related problems.

The organisation is focusing on problems such as sleep apnoea, which can cause people to stop breathing and is thought to be one of the most significant problems of its type in the country.

But the Welsh assembly government has said it is down to local health boards to improve services for sufferers, although plans are in place to see how they can better provide provision.

Chris Mulholland, head of BLF Wales, said: "As individuals, and as a country, we have to wake up to the importance of sleep. With increasing rates of sleep apnoea, we have to ensure that everyone in Wales who needs access to a sleep service can get it."

A study was recently published in the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine, from Arizona State University, which provided evidence sleep problems were connected to significant reductions in the quality of life for a sufferer.
