The popular Apple iPad gadget could result in sleep disruption for people who use it before bed, research has suggested. This is because the sleek gizmo has a backlit display, which is in contrast to the e-paper, appearing in other devices such as the Kindle. This was pointed out by Alon Avidan, a neurologist and associate director of the Sleep Disorders Center at the University of California, Los Angeles. E-paper is designed to appear like the less bright pages of books, by reflecting light in other directions. Mr Avidan and researchers who looked into the issue said light prevents the release of the hormone which allows the body to drift off to sleep, called melatonin.
