Bedtime reading can affect joints, says expert

21/04/2011

Reading before bed is one of the most widespread nightly rituals enjoyed by millions across the world. However, Wanita Ashok, founder of the Moving Body fitness centres, has pointed out that the neck and back are often affected by bad reading positions.

Indeed, reading in bed does help one drift off to sleep, however prolonged reading is best left to somewhere other than the bed. Spending a long period of time in one position is worst for the neck and back, however it encourages general joint stiffness and pain throughout the whole body.

Speaking to dnaindia.com, Ashok also stated that continued reading in bed can damage muscles and joints, eventually leading to difficulties moving smoothly.

Reading in bed should by no means be discouraged, although it is beneficial to switch position occasionally, as this distributes weight and stress to other parts of the body, rather than concentrating them solely on one area. Through doing this you will be able to read comfortably in bed, without causing pain to your muscles or joints.
