Bedtime for Spanish siesta

08/04/2011

The Spanish siesta has all but vanished according to a recent article. The Guardian states that the traditional mid-day rest has been put to bed as less and less Spaniards can find the time during the day.

A cultural norm, universally accepted, siestas have now been pushed, almost out of existence, due to increasingly fast-paced modern times.

Additionally, Spaniards are spending less time in bed and going to sleep later, making for unfocussed schoolchildren and drowsy workers. Studies have shown that Spaniards spend 20 minutes less in bed than they did 100 years ago.

This, however, is not a new problem, nor is it the entire problem. Many studies have directly linked various health problems in those with irregular or disrupted sleep-patterns.
