Bedding can affect youngsters who have asthma

08/06/2010

Choosing the correct bedding for youngsters with asthma could help their condition, research has suggested.

A study from the David Hide Asthma and Allergy Research Centre discovered tackling dust mites could decrease the irritation which can be harmful to sufferers.

The research involved 58 babies sleeping on vinyl mattresses, which were treated with acracide to eliminate the presence of mites.

Another group of children had no alterations made to their bedding during the experiment.

Study author Dr Martha Scott said: "It is possible to prevent the onset of asthma in high-risk individuals by instituting a strict regime that avoids some of the common triggers for asthma in the first year of life."

The study follows research from the department of psychiatry at Penn State University published recently, revealing unusual sleep breathing problems could be linked to the seasons.
