Bed rail safety is questioned by report

27/10/2009

Bed rails for those who are in need of home care have been questioned by a newspaper report which looked at potential safety issues surrounding them.

The rails are often used to provide extra support and leverage for the weak and elderly as they maneuver in a bed, and are a way of preventing somebody from falling out when turning over.

However, the Montreal Gazette said there is a risk people can get trapped in between them.

Rails could also cause problems if people try to climb out over them and then fall, the report adds.

Recommendations aimed at people using bed rails say they should make sure they are familiar with the procedures, and knaow how transferring equipment is used.

They should also check that the mattress and side rails don't have significant gaps between them.

ABC15 has recently recommended that parents might want to think about installing bed rails if they are moving a toddler from a crib to a bed.
