'50 per cent' of kids missing out on enough sleep

12/04/2010

A charity has said over half of all schoolchildren are often missing out on a decent night's bed rest.

Sleep Scotland pointed out while drugs and alcohol are often highlighted as risks to growing young people, the health implications of a poor night's sleep are not.

Getting less than the recommended nine hours of sleep could result in poor schoolwork or even cause health problems.

Talking to newspaper The Independent, the organisation said televisions and consoles in the bedrooms of youngsters can be to blame for them not dozing enough.

Sleep Scotland's boss Nikki Cameron said: "You have to take the message about lack of sleep as seriously as other dangerous habits."

She said more needed to be done to sort the problem out, adding the point of getting enough sleep had to be passed to youngsters of all ages.
