Can you sleep on a pocket sprung memory foam mattress 12 hours after opening it, we had to wait 5 days for delivery because of carrier problems, we had no bed for that time so slept on it the same night. Now 3 days later, it is 17 cm and should be a depth of 20. Have we ruined it sleeping on it before 48 hours?

You can accept some settlement with a new mattress it is unlikely that you will have ruined it by sleeping on it straight away.  Be sure to rotate your new mattress frequently to ensure the settlement is even.
