The platform top base is firm whereas the sprung edge base acts like a shock absorber. Depending on how firm you want the overall feel to be will determine which base you choose.
Generally, the rule is, if your base is firm, choose a softer mattress and if your base is soft, choose a firmer mattress, to achieve a medium feel sleeping comfort
